General Description

Sewerage Catchment:

  • Potter Point outfall is the discharge point for the Cronulla STP, which services areas from Kurnell and Cronulla in the east to Illawong, Sutherland and Heathcote in the west. It does not provide services to Bundeena, Mainbar, Sandy Point or the industrial areas of the Kurnell Peninsula. Cronulla STP also services the township of Helensburgh, which lies within the Wollongong local government area.

Sewage Treatment:

  • Cronulla STP is an advanced primary treatment plant and provides screening, primary sedimentation and removal of oil, grease and floatables. The removed sludge is digested and dewatered. Enhanced suspended solids and grease removal is enhanced by a CAS (chemically assisted sedimentation - the addition of ferric chloride and polymer to improve removal of suspended solids and grease) process. Effluent is passed through fine screens before discharge.

Outfall:

  • Through a shoreline outfall into about 6m water depth at Potter Point on the southern side of the Kurnell Peninsula. Median initial dilutions are 50 (Sydney Water Corporation 1998f, MHL769 1997).
